Hello,

Transalpina officially is closed for traffic between Ranca and Obarsia Lotrului because the rehabilitation works are not finshed yet. Between Ranca and Obarsia Lotrului the road goes 20 km up to 2000 m and it is dangerous to drive because the road has no railings, signs and no road signs. If the weather it is bad then the risk is even grater.
If a car accident happens will be your fault not the authorities, and probably the auto insurance will not compensate you or other car driver because you were on a road officially closed to motor traffic.
It is true that a lot of people are driving on Transalpina road from Novaci to Sibiu or Sebes, but they are doing this on their own risk. You can find the discution in english about this problem here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2&start=1130
Important: the site: http://www.transalpina.biz it is not a site of Romanian authorities, it is a private one, but we try to be objectiv in ours informations.

Thanks for the quick reply Alin.
We're on motorcycles & I think if we take it easy we'll be ok. We are not young riders & don't take unnecessary risks.
I understand the risk & the fact that you're a private website.

Two weeks ago we set off with the plan to travel the Transfagarasan from south to north & return south via Transalpina. We got almost as far as the tunnel before snow stopped us & we had to return the way we came. We're hoping we can now head north up Transalpina & come back via Transfagarasan. At least we'll have ridden both sides. Do you know if Transfagarasan is now open ?

Welcome!
Transfagarasan officially is closed until 1 July but I already drive on it a week ago. I made also a movie: http://youtu.be/QoacRW6qe5s :)
Have a nice trip and maybe you come back with some photos from Transalpina and Transfagarasan on forum.

Cool video !
And thanks so much for the info. Looking forward to it now.
I'll put up pictures when I get home but I doubt they'll be as good as the ones already posted
